Alcea was born to a family of nomadic Varisians. Her father was a talented acrobat and her mother was a gifted sorceress, and they travelled with a group of performers from small town to small town throughout the grasslands of western Varisia. Her mother had desperately hoped Alcea would manifest magical abilities and follow her, but she had no ability, and Alcea had no interest in studying magic. Life as a wandering performer was often hard, and the only solace Alcea found was in dance, which she had learned from an aged member of their troupe.

When she was 13, her travelling party joined with a small group of missionaries of Irori, and after spending days in deep conversation with one of the monks, Alcea realized she had finally found the path she sought. When the two groups parted, Alcea remained with the adepts, and began study of their ways. Her martial abilities blossomed under their tutelage. She also continued her dance as a way to honor her family, and incorporated many of her newly-learned martial skills into her routines; the result was dynamic and exciting to watch, and she found herself easily drawing crowds and able to greatly augment the income of her small group of missionaries.

She came to Sandpoint with her order to attend the Swallowtail Festival, and to continue her missionary work for Irori.
